Is My Diet Still Working?

18 Mar 2009 In: Diet Plan

One question you will find yourself asking eventually is, “Is My Diet Still Working?”  This is an inevitable question you ask whe you stop making big losses over the course of a week.  i got on the scale today and only lost 1 pound since last weeks weigh in.  i was a bit shocked.  I got off the scale and got back on and it read the same.  I had some coffee went to the bathroom and repeated.  Not much change.  I was sort of disapointed since I was so good and didn’t order a pizza on Sunday when it sounded like a really good idea.  Then I sat back down and started to ponder everything that it could be.

Was it that I had too many calories?  Was it I didn’t get enough exercise in?  Was my body reacting to the diet the way it has in the past?  These are all good questions that needed some answers.  When you stop losing it is good to ask these questions.  What is bad is when you decide to say screw it and give up before you know the answers.  I was damn near ready to do just that and declare a cheat day and start off with a big bowl of frosted mini wheats.  I didn’t though.

I started to think back about what i have been doing.  i wasn’t eating more than normal, in fact I think I am eating fewer calories which poses its own weight loss problems.  My knees have been killing me so I haven’t done the exercise bike, which might have contributed to the lack of weight loss.  I was prepared to accept that a pound or two difference day to day isn’t unheard of, even during weight loss.  This is why I use a weekly weigh in rather than daily.

I sat pondering all the posibilities and then it hit me.  I was thirsty.  Not only was I thirsty yesterday I had quite a bit of salt in my diet and didn’t have a lot of water, not even my normal amount.  After some extra water today I reweighed myself tonight and despite eating more than 3000 calories have managed to lose four pounds.  I mark this as a five pound week and feel good about it.

The moral of the story is before you just give up on losing weight try and figure out why you aren’t losing and do a little testing to see if it makes a difference.  Don’t be afraid to start weighing food, keeping a detailed log of your day, or consult with someone who has been there.

Weigh In 3-09-09

10 Mar 2009 In: Confessions

I got up this morning and looked down at the scale and was pleased to see I am still losing weight, especially after last weeks carbo binge.  It was a good two days and I don’t begrudge myself for taking them either.  I had fun, enjoyed myself, and then paid the price.  For several days I felt like a dead bloated whale.  I retained huge amounts of water, my energy sucked and lets not talk about the migraine.

No pain, no gain they say and I had it.  Why go through the pain though if I knew I would feel like crap for having had a good time?  Easy, if you don’t do things to enjoy your life, what is the point of getting thin?  So what if I will live longer if I am not occasionally enjoy those extra days, weeks, months or years I get out of the bargain.  I think too many people are afraid of dying so they forget how to live.  I don’t want to be that way.

Look for more recipes this week, I think I might finally get a chance to post some of them now that the other startups I have going are well and truly started up.  Check out my latest review at PodCast Patrol!

Day Twenty Down Twenty Seven Pounds

2 Mar 2009 In: Confessions

The titles says it all.  I am on day twenty and as of this morning I am down to 338 pounds.  I know you are still saying “Oh my God, you’re fat bastard!”  Well yeah that would be me and I killed Kenny too.  I however am losing and will tell you it hasn’t been easy.  I know what you are thinking eating bacon and eggs for breakfast and steak once a day must be hard.  it is.  Bacon and eggs without toast and hash browns is easy the first time or two, but try it for a week and see how you feel about it.  Don’t even get me started about the steak either.  A big sixteen ounce steak is grand, but in the end try having it without garlic bread and a loaded baked potato for very long.

This isn’t an easy way to lose weight, but it is certainly effective.

Simple Exercises

20 Feb 2009 In: exercise

It is possible to lose weight without exercising.  That is not to say it is a good idea or how much you will lose.  The question is do you start off a major weight loss expedition exercising or not exercising?  My thoughts is you need to make a lifestyle change gradually or your body isn’t likely to know what to do with itself.

If you radically alter your diet, as with a low carb diet,  and start increasing your physical activity at the same time, based on personal observations, you are likely to tax the body into doing nothing until it adjusts.  This adjustment period can cause you to quit your weight loss program for lack of results.  If you feel like crap without seeing any benefits it is just too easy to say it isn’t worth it.

My advice is to start your new weight loss plan with either a change in diet or an increase in cardio exercise.  After a week to ten days you can slowly introduce the other.  In my plan you start with a dietary change first, since you won’t feel like exercising when you are dealing with the no carb nasties.  Read the rest of this entry »

About this blog

When I was fat is meant as much to enlighten you as it is to make me remember what it took for me to get thin, again. I call it like I see it and if that is something you think might offend your delicate sensibilities then this probably is not the best place for you.
